Day 33: “What is Worth Guarding?”
May 30, 2019
Original Painting: “Guardians of the Sacred Fire,” Acrylic on Canvas 24×24, 4/5/2016
The idea of having a guardian or two in my life is reassuring. As a child, I may have been more connected to these guardians. At some point, I disconnected the direct dial, quieted my intuitive talk and lost touch with my guardians. The good thing about guardians, is you may leave them, they don’t leave you. The question becomes, “What is worth guarding?” Is it life? Is it the promise of the mission or purpose to complete here on earth? What keeps these guardians ever vigilant?
Their guidance, protection and love surround us in our mundane living. It could be that forgotten item you turned around to get, that kept you from that fender bender, or the nudge to call a friend that needs consoling, or the life changing opportunity of a new job offer, it can even be opening a book to a random page and reading the message that you needed to hear at that very moment. It is always there, just waiting to be seen, experienced and appreciated. Thank you guardians.
When I first painted, “Guardians of the Sacred Fire,” I had the orientation different than I do today. Originally, there were two Tiki faces that I saw flanking the center fire. They reminded me of “Dum Dum” from “A Night at the Museum.” They brought humor and a stoic secure presence to my space. Now the orientation is that of eyes in the sky peering over the heart of the painting (as pictured above). I question why my protectors have a strong masculine persona? When have I ever been rescued by a man? Sorry guys, but it is true! In my life, historically, it has been me doing the saving, the guiding and even the pushing others in the direction of their dreams. Maybe I see the masculine guardians, because that is what the fairy tales and even my Catholic upbringing has instilled deep in my psyche? Certainly, I can come up with badass female protectors, saints with a mission and goddesses that saved the land. What is this predatory archetype that lingers like peering eyes over my heart?
I come back to questions, what is worth guarding and what is sacred? I would say more than life, Spirit is sacred. It is the life force, not life itself that is sacred. It is what fuels the fire. Brings purpose and meaning. It is the essence of Love. Not love the romantic sort. Love the transcending sort. It makes blood flow, hearts beat, dreams come alive. It is ONENESS. It is both masculine and feminine. We are in a time when many of our heroes are heroines. Certainly, Marvel Studios is attempting to give the message that women have superpowers too. I come back to the curious question of my guardian being a masculine face? Maybe it is the subconscious assuring me that there is an equal, masculine forces that can meet me where I am? Spirit has no gender, nor does God at least for me. It is not God the father who dictated this. It is people, and if we are honest, it is men that created the patriarchy. It was the culture and still is. I feel my guardians as a blending of masculine and feminine. One is not better than the other. I experience Spirit as the Life Force, the Chi, the Presence of something greater than myself. It is protective and nurturing, it is strong and comforting, it is truly the expression of transcending LOVE. It is my hope that as I continue this journey, I will let go of the labels that divide. I realize that we divide into opposites to create understanding. Bringing ourselves back to Oneness is a tall task and it is Truth of our existence…we ARE ALL ONE, Divinely inspired, created and sculpted. We have guardians, intuition, deep knowing for a reason. The more we use these gifts, the more we improve our world. These are the treasures worth guarding, and mostly from ourselves. I have suppressed my gifts, guidance and intuition. I have ignored messages. What would be different if I had listened? How would I be different? It is time to listen. I express deep gratitude for my guardians, my intuition and my gifts. Blessings and peace on your journey.
