Day 17 of 59 Days: "It's All Chi (Qi) to Me"
Day 17: “It’s All Qi (Chi) to Me”
May 7, 2019
Original Painting: “#9 Little Accumulating, No Effort,” Acrylic on Paper 18×24, 11/7/18
I will start by saying, Day 16’s writing was a bust! Or I could say, day 16 was a day of rest, or a pause…really, the painting I chose to write about had no words yesterday. I could have just shared that and been done, but these 59 days are about writing. There are times the writing just isn’t ready to come out. That’s ok with me…so I did chores on my day off instead.
On to day 17! “It is all Qi (Chi) to me,” is a tenet for me. You can call it energy, ki, qi, chi, prana, life force, spirit, or something else; in the end we cannot live without it. Many study it, learning the systems of the chakras, the dan tiens, the meridians, the etheric body, prayer and laying on of hands or something else…and, “it’s all chi to me!” Breaking it down simply to Chi is not to diminish any school or tradition of teaching. This is just how I see it, use it and work with it. I have studied several systems of energy over the years and for me the language that resonates with my heart is that of Qi or Chi from the Asian schools of Tai Chi, Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong.
With the booming popularity of Yoga in the fitness and wellness worlds, Chakras may be more familiar terminology. From Sanskrit meaning “Wheel”, charkras are the energy centers of the body. Some systems name seven major chakras, some nine. This is not a lesson in the chakra system, but it does connect to today’s painting of the use of colors that align with the seven chakra system. The colors of the rainbow, starting at the base and moving up to the crown are the colors of the chakras. These are the progression of colors in this painting with a zig-zag of stairs ascending the center. This is one way to work with energy, a linear upward moving idea. In theory, moving upward, ascension, rising to the challenge, promotion, and all things that speak of the climb up are viewed as positive or successful. Because the word chakra means wheel, chakras spin and create movement. The progression could be circular or a spiraling through them. So, there is linear and circular movement in this system. These wheels are light, another form or definition of energy. Light when refracted splits into the colors of the rainbow.
The beauty of seeing a rainbow after a rainstorm or in the mist of a waterfall is the “magic” of reflection, refraction and dispersion of light through the water droplets or moisture in the air. Rainbows appear opposite the sun in the sky. If we take the analogy of the rainbow, how can we share the colors of our chakras in the world? The I-Ching Gua #9 is Little Accumulating. The image of this gua is a cloud with little moisture. It is unlikely to produce rain, much less a rainbow. There are times in our life where we don’t seem to be accumulating much energy. At these times, we need to avoid dispersing too much energy otherwise we will be depleted, tired and even stressed. Just because we see a cloud, doesn’t mean it will rain. Just because we see what “should” be done, “could” be done, doesn’t mean we are charged to do it. Balance is key. I read recently, that sometimes we must sit on our hands and just allow ourselves to be where we are, and learn the lesson through non-action.
Yesterday I sat on my hands. I didn’t write. I had to justify it in my head. I had to allow it to be. This morning I selected a different painting to discuss and here is the rainbow, the energy and the beauty. For me the path is not linear, and the journey is long. It is a process of the wheel circling, spiraling and moving. At times, the moving is in slow motion with little accumulating… and, there is still moments of movement. I am still breathing, gathering and cultivating my Chi. Qi Gong, Qi is energy and Gong is work. Qi Gong is Energywork. It can be practicing a forming, writing a blog, eating or resting. It is process of cultivating and sharing our purpose and life force. What is your Q iGong, your energywork? Where do you see your rainbow? How do you share your light? Refracting it, reflecting it or dispersing it or a little of all three? The charkas are part of a system and meridians have their system as well. Systems are tools for learning, growing, understanding and gaining wisdom. What systems do you use? How do they support you? My hope is that I continue to appreciate the systems, tools and metaphors that teach and guide me. I hope to appreciate each color of the rainbow as much as the rainbow itself. Blessings on your journey.
